Begin near the church of Santi Apostoli, from here, the route follows peaceful backstreets northward, away from the crowds, offering an ideal introduction to Cannaregio’s authentic atmosphere.

Your first major stop is the Oratorio dei Crociferi, a small but extraordinary building that once formed part of a medieval complex dedicated to caring for pilgrims and the poor that will be exclusively opened for you and your friends/family.

Inside, the oratory preserves a remarkable cycle of paintings by Palma il Giovane, one of the leading artists of late Renaissance Venice. His canvases vividly narrate the history and mission of the Crociferi order, combining dramatic movement, rich color, and strong emotional intensity. The intimate scale of the space allows for close engagement with the artworks, making this a highlight of the tour and a rare opportunity to experience Venetian painting outside the major museums.

Just steps away lies the Campo dei Gesuiti, opening dramatically toward the lagoon. Dominating the square is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, commonly known as the Jesuit Church.

This imposing Baroque structure contrasts strongly with the modest oratory. Inside, richly patterned marble, gilded decoration, and grand ceiling frescoes express the power and ambition of the Jesuit order in 17th- and 18th-century Venice. Among the highlights is Titian’s “Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence”, a masterpiece that anchors the church’s artistic importance. Time here allows for appreciation of both architecture and painting.

The final walk leads north along Fondamenta Nove, where the dense urban fabric suddenly opens onto the water. Here, Venice reveals its maritime identity.

From the wide waterfront, enjoy expansive views across the lagoon toward Murano, the historic island of glassmakers before sitting down for an after-tour snack and glass of wine or heading on to the Venetian islands that you can easily reach from here with waterbus nr 12.
